Custom Order Skirt: Asymmetrical Double Circular Skirt: Start to Finish

I've been working on a custom order high-waisted double circular skirt.
The first photo is the very top outer layer of the skirt.
It is fully lined and under-stitched as seen in the 2nd photo.

Just to give you more information, a double circular skirt means that the front is one full circle skirt and so is the back.
So it is two circles in one skirt.
And because the top layer is lined, there are a total of 4 circles in this one layer.

There are two more layers that go under the top outer layer.
The first layer is the plain lining layer, which is the same pattern as the top layer.....front and back circle pattern.

Then the final layer is another layer of lining with tulle.
This is the "attached petticoat" layer so that the skirt gives a fuller flare and flounce.

I first cut over 30 pieces of tulle.
They are about 8"L x 50"W
The first photo shows some of those pieces that I cut.

Then I attach them together and gather them up with the machine, which is shown in the second photo.

Lastly, I mark on the petticoat layer where I want to sew the gathered tulle.
Then the tulle is pinned onto the fabric and sewn.
The final photo shows just the front petticoat.
I have to do one more of these for the back part.

So in total, there are the following:
2 main fabric circular patterns (top layer)
2 satin lining fabric circular patterns (top under layer)
2 satin lining fabric circular pattern (acts as official lining)
2 taffeta lining fabric circular pattern (petticoat layer)

Circle skirts usually requires the entire skirt is in shape of a circle.
This double circular skirt has 2 circle shapes in one skirt.
With all the layers included, it's like making 8 circle skirts!!

The next two photos show the front and back of the waist part of the skirt.
The waist is corset inspired, so it's a high waisted and paneled.
The front is an asymmetrical lambskin piece with a circular dip.
This was a really tricky part to figure out how to attach the skirt to the waist while having just the dip fully lined and hanging free.

The bottom photo shows the back part of the waist.
It has adjustable gunmetal clasps held by lambskin trim.

Custom Order Skirt: August 23rd

Hello Readers,

I just finished one of several custom order skirts this afternoon.
This one is a paneled skirt made from an Italian novelty linen.
There are screen printed branch designs with scattered sequins and embroidery.
I attached black silk organza on the side panels and waistband.
It is fully lined with a satin polyester lining.
The bottom is finished with a gathered hemline.

This skirt is great because it can easily translate from a work day skirt to an evening/weekend skirt by shirt and shoes that you wear.

Today's Project :: Capelet

The silhouette of a capelet is usually like a triangle. The top is a narrow opening for the head, and the bottom flares out.
For women that are pear shape, capelets can sometimes be unflattering because they only affirm the pear shape figure.

So today's challenge, I wanted to design a capelet that flatters the female figure better.
This design gives us more top by adding an oversized collar and gathered piece on the shoulder.
The top stitched trims gives us this nice V-shape which visually draws the eyes to narrower waist.

Style Of The Week With Alex

Hello again, everyone! Did you miss me? I am sorry to say that this will be my final style of the week because it is my last day here in the studio with Sumie. It has been an amazing summer, but the internship ends as my final year of school starts.

Speaking of which, that is this week's theme. The question I asked myself was, "How would I want to dress going back to school?" And my response is, "With an awesome punk school girl look, of course!"

The top I chose is something I consider a staple piece. I believe everybody needs one white blouse in their wardrobe that can be worn casually or professionally. This top fits the bill. It is super comfortable because of the fabric it is made out of, and you can get a variety of looks from the top due to it's sophistication and the attached neck tie.

To play it up a little, the vest was put on top. This vest is great because it can fit different chest sizes due to the strings in the front, or you can tie it in the back. I also love it because it is a really chic little vest, but it has a whimsical feel due to the button accent. Perfect for our punky school girl look.

Because no school girl look is complete with out a cute skirt this snake skin print skirt was perfect. The print overlay causes a hemline just above the knee which is short, but not too short. It is also slightly see through which means breathable and comfortable. Underneath is a polyester skirt, which is also a nice length, but again not too short... and thankfully not see through!

The accessories, of course, are the last things used to finish this weeks style. Remember the days when we were young, naive, and thought scrunchies were... dare I say fashionable? Thankfully, unlike scrunchies, wristlets are the fashionable approach to a school girl look accessory. This piece is also made with a snake skin print that blends the accessory into the rest of the ensemble. We also have super cute ankle spats! Cute enough to go over any sock, or pair of flats you might wear in the fall, but adjustable for almost any size.

There you have it! Some of you may be going back to school this fall, while others may not. But it's never too late (or too early) to wear something fashionable to reminisce. I've had so much fun talking to you all this summer! I wish you the best in your future endeavors!

Hi,

It's Aliya. I'm here again for style of week!

I picked these pieces to show how much I adore clothes and fashion. I chose all these pieces for different reasons. I chose the button shirt because you can wear it different kind of ways and for many different occasions. I chose the capelet because it's trendy but still sophisticated in many ways such as the colors, the buttons, etc. I chose the skirt because I am in love with lace. Additionally the other reason is that it just goes well with the capelet and the button up shirt.

I thought it would be nice to let you know some things about myself. I'm 15, and for the summer Sumie is my boot camp teacher. Yes I said it , my boot camp teacher!

I'm an amazing person on the inside as well as the outside. I've been in love with fashion all my life ....well not exactly all my life but until this year, drawing and just making little stuff at the age 6 was how I started.

Aliya's First Style Of The Week

Hi ,
My name is Aliya, and this is my first style of the day.
I chose these four piece to represent me as a designer and to represent Sumie's clothing as best i could.
I especially love this look because I can see myself in this one day.

I just fell in love with this wool tweed shrug because of the charcoal black and the little bits of white. I picked the dress because I loved the stiffness and how it flares out. The choker just went so well with this shrug and dress because of the hint of the light navy blue that pops out. The anklets were my absolute favorite because I jus fell in love with the lace and snaps.

Look of the Week "Rain rain, not on my outfit"

Hi everyone,

It's Caitlyn here for this week's look. I'm sad to say this is my last day interning for Sumie Tachibana. It has been down pouring on and off today, but I hope that is not bringing you fashionistas down. That is why I choose a hooded capelet to go with a Aline mini skirt. You can walk around without getting your hair or shoulders wet then easily take off the capelet to show off your cute outfit. The lightweight blouse and skirt are great for this weather so you can dry off quickly. This is also a great way to wear shiny fabrics while still looking chic.

The original Alice III has a white embossed linen in place of the magenta silk taffeta.

Snow White :: Photo Shoot

This past weekend we had a really cool editorial test photo shoot titled: Snow White.

My dear friend, Princess and I went to a Park in Kew Gardens to pick up several large fallen branches earlier that week. Then I painted them black. The forest ground is black mulch that I purchased from Home Depot. And there was the beginning of a dark and mysterious forest!

Style of the Week

Hello, all! Alex here again with another style of the week. Summer is right around the corner, and you know what that means... kids everywhere! Remember those days of freedom and fun in the summer time? Ah, only if we could be so lucky to be young and care free! This weeks look is inspired by youth.

Sometimes it can be a challenge with the "age" of your outfit. Always remember that it is possible to look younger or sometimes .... older... with the clothes your are wearing. This look is an appropriate way to dress up with a youthful vibe.

First, we have the top; a white twill weave made from stretch cotton twill. This means that the fabric is breathable, and, this cotton has some stretch which means extra comfort while wearing this top. Not only is it great in the sense of comfort, it is also fantastic when it comes to styling. The neck extends, almost like a scarf, which means you can get more than one look from just this one shirt. Finally, this shirt is great for the office, dressing up or down!

Secondly, there is the jumper. This is the main piece that gives our style of the week a youthful appearance. Because the shirt is a little more on the formal side, the jumper's curves and playful silhouette helps to give the look a more exuberant vibe. It is made from cotton, which gives the jumper plenty of movement and you the comfort and freedom to get around.

Finally are the accessories!

First, is the corsage cuff. This was used to play along with the jumper's youthfulness, but, can also be worn with almost any casual outfit to give it that extra "Umph!" It is also very soft and comfortable, which is important.

Finally, are the anklets. Just like the cuff, it is a great way to finish a look. They are fun, can give emphasis to the feet when wearing a skirt, or can dress up casual shoes. Because they are "corset styled" they can be adjusted for any size. What a great way to finish a look!

Summer may be just around the corner, but with this look you will be feeling cheerful all day long. Hoping you are having a great week and an even better weekend!

Final Project

Hello, this is So back here.
This post is about the final project of mine. Sadly my internship is over tomorrow, Friday.
The theme of the final project is "Post-Apocalyptic," and I chose to make a head piece.

I thought of a fantasy version of the world after World War III.
This head piece is designed with the idea that the surrounding environment after World War III is going to be really dangerous and harsh. And I thought, "What if we need a headgear to protect ourselves?"

I made the base with thick plastic mesh.
Then hand sewed the wires once shaped and sewed them on the piece of the plastic mesh. Different fabrics are used too; for example cotton painted netting, 2 different kinds of gauze, classic netting, and gunmetal colored chain to decorate them.
The shaped wires are covered with a hand top-stitched bias tape and angled at the end to give a pointed look so it looks threatening.
And it is attached to a hair comb.

The photos show the almost end version of head-piece. For the final look rivets should be put on them.

Hello again, everyone!

Alex here, hoping everyone had a nice memorial day weekend! With summer approaching us, I decided to make this week's style a one that you could wear on a hot summer day.

The top shown is a cute tank top with a leather bow embellishment. It is a great top because you can wear it with almost any bottom to achieve a dress-up or a casual look. Today's look is more casual, but as you can see from Caitlyn's blog post from earlier this top can be worn in a more sophisticated manner.

The bottom is achieved using two pieces.

The skirt is a short skirt, which is great for hot summer weather. If you are a smaller size, you can also wear it lower on the hips for a dropped hemline. I chose the tutu to really demonstrate how much puff both skirts really have. This gives the outfit an overall playful look.

People sometimes underestimate the power of accessories. They can completely set the tone of your look. The corsage carries the theme of fullness like the skirts. The anklets finish the outfit because it is always great to have an option to dress up your summer flip-flops / sandals.

Style of the Week

Hello, everyone! I am Sumie's third intern, Belle Alexandre. However, everyone just calls me Alex.

From now on I will be bringing you style of the week on Wednesdays.

This week is a simple look that you could wear out to lunch with friends, or at night transformed into a really chic night look with the right top.

The top is a really comfortable knit with a cowl effect in the back, leather straps for support, and a gathered sleeve below the shoulders. This top is great because you can dress it up with a nice skirt, or even pair it with jeans for a more dressed down and casual look. It is also a knit fabric which means not only is it soft, but it gives stretch for a more comfortable fit.

The next piece we have is the skirt, which I personally love. The skirt itself has a well balanced design even though there are asymmetrical accents. The top layer is made from leather, and raw silk. The bottom is made from a cotton fabric with a lace hem detail. I love this skirt because it can be worn with casual items like the top for a fun day look. Or if you prefer you can wear it with a more sophisticated top.

Finally, I must talk about the foot accessory! Ever have a really great pair of shoes that just needed to be turned up a notch? With these ankle spats you can give that extra flair to almost any look. I chose this accessory to complete this week's style!

This is So here writing Style of the Week on Monday.
Today's main focus is the easy sophisticated look.

The black knit shirt with the white cotton skirt adds sophistication because of the leather ruffle details with chains on the shirt and the silk trim and multi-textured fabrics on the skirt.

The black knit shirt with leather ruffles is easy to fit a variety of sizes because of the loose flared hem detail on the bottom of the shirt.
It is also very easy to match with bottoms that are already in your closet, such as your classic jeans.
The cotton textured skirt is comfortable while working and also easy to match with a beautiful black blouse that most people own at least one.

I am a new intern for Sumie Tachibana, just arrived NewYork like a week back.
And my name is So Young, but in short people call me 'SO.'
I am going to be posting Style of the Week every Tuesdays.

I am guessing the weather is getting warmer day by day.
So, I have chosen T-shirt with ST print and Jumper for a look this week.
The combination of the T-shirt and the jumper does good for figure-conscious people, particularly with narrow shoulders as the decoration of the shoulder part makes the shoulders look a little bigger and it goes well with the jumper's bottom. And finally it makes the whole shape look perfect.
This look would go well with casual outing such as dining and hanging out with friends.

You can always match the jumpers with leggings or lace stockings instead of the foot-wear in these pictures. The jumper is currently not for a sale on etsy, but there are similar looking jumpers available.

Hi my name is Caitlyn, and I am interning for Sumie Tachibana for three months. Spring has just arrived but we are still getting the chills from winter. For this week's look I put together a cape with a daring high waisted pencil skirt. Then added on some girly touches with a lace/leather wristlet and a bow tie style shirt. Instead of reaching for the same old jacket, why not try something different? A cape is sure to make a statement while keeping you comfortable and warm. This look can easily be dressed up by adding a clutch purse and heels. Or this look can be dressed down with the tote bag and simple flats.

NEW PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT :: The Corset Belt

I am testing out a new product that I just made, called the corset belt.....aka obi!
This is unique from many obi style belts out there because it is paneled to really fit the shape of your waist.
There are a total of 5 panels to create this belt.

This is great to accessorize and give shape to loose fitted tops and give separation to dresses as well.
They really make a nice cinching waistline and flatter your curves!

If the first two have a good response, I will be making more of these and variations as well.

Custom Order Pants for Men

I recently finished a pair of men's custom order pants for Jasin Cadic, the creator of the Band Handful of Dust.

To be completely honest, it's out of my comfort zone to make deconstructive style work, but this one felt really good. My main goal was texture texture texture!

I did lots of patch work using various leather skins......snakeskin, lambskin, pig, cow and other materials such as cotton netting and wool gauze.

Project Update

This week I've been working on a few more variations of the scarflette, a total of 11!
I've been adding bowties and chains to a few of them.....to add a little more eye catching textures.

I've also started working on a larger project, a high- waisted corsetted style super poofed up double circle skirt.
It's kind of funny how it started. The other day I watched a clip of SNL with Jim Carrie as the black swan.
Watching it made me want to make a white swan tutu inspired piece.

The top layer has an open weave white knit lined with a sturdy cotton sateen.
I am planning on adding mesh, tulle, and maybe lace layers underneath.....we'll see.
I'm not sure if I want to make it more avant garde/conceptual or more wearable.
I guess I will just have to feel it out at the moment. :)

The most important announcement is that I will not be launching a new fall/winter 2011/12 collection in February. I am taking a short break from the collection line.
However I am planning to launch a mini collection later this Spring. Stay Tuned!

A very Happy New Years to Everyone!

This year I really hope to finally create an online shop through the main website.
And I would also like to make a Japanese version of the site as well.

I've been designing 2 collections per year since 2007.
This February, I plan on taking a break from releasing a new collection.
Instead I plan on continuing my expansion on custom orders and one of a kind items.

Don't forget your legs!

I originally started making leg accessories out of necessity.
We would have to shoot the latest collection every season, and shoes were becoming an issue.
I bought a few pairs of basic shoes for models to wear, but they were so plain compared to the rest of the look. And models don't necessarily have the kind of shoes I would like them to wear.
So I started making leg accessories that can be worn over the basic black pumps and give them new life.

I've made spats, leg warmers, leg corsets, leg cuffs, pretty much anything to make the legs just as important as the rest of my collection.

So I thought, why not make some signature Sumie style leg items for etsy!

The latest look book shoot is finally coming up.
It will be this Sunday, November 14th.

The collection is titled "P18," inspired by 18th century France and pirates.
I am very much looking forward to working with photographer ,Rob Chatterson and Michael Schwarzer from Midoma salon as always.
This time we have new blood in the group for our makeup artist.
She is not fully confirmed for this shoot yet, so I will not reveal the surprise.

Working on the new collection

This week I am finishing the fall/winter 2010 collection in order to be ready for the look book shoot this Sunday. I've attached a photo of the jacket I've been working on since yesterday.
It's almost done, but still needs a few more details.

Working on a new line is challenging in so many ways!
The concept and fabric shopping are the easy part.
Then comes the long long hours of draping, making patterns, cutting fabric, and sewing for each piece.
It's not too bad if you have a team, but this season I am on my own.
It feels like a long journey all alone with your own thoughts to keep you company.
I get to think a lot about my life while working on these pieces.
Sometimes I shut myself in the studio for a few days at a time.
And when I walk outside, the daylight is so blinding!
I love making new collections, but as I get older, it's definitely that much harder to stay up and work long hours. I am looking forward to Monday when the collection and the photo shoot is done.

Other than normal work hours, another exciting thing about finishing a collection is getting to play with all the beautiful remnant fabrics and making smaller one of a kind items for etsy.
The fabrics for this collection are unbelievable!!

This week is off to a great start.

The new Ins and Out Magazine will be out with a 12 page fashion spread photographed by my very own Rob Chatterson which features 4 pages of my beautiful pieces.

The Midoma Salon from the upper east side as always tagged teamed and created amazing hair styles that perfectly complimented the designs as well as the eye candy make up work by Natalia Egorova. (Both Michael from Midoma and Natalia were part of the brilliant team of artists that were part of my latest Spring/Summer 2009 Look Book Shoot)

This Thursday, I will be interviewed on a local TV Show called "Hooked" sponsored by the Queens Council on the Arts. Joining with me will be Virginia Mason-Martinez from Subdivision Boutique and Joel Visaard. How Exciting!

Later on Thursday evening, I will be participating in a subterranean bazaar event in the Carroll Gardens (Brooklyn). Prices will be hugely marked down for your shopping desires.

Lastly, I will be teaching a small class this Saturday in spirit of the holidays!
